IPX Ratings for Earbuds Explained (IPX4, IPX5, IPX7)

The "IPX" number on an earbud box tells you exactly how much water it survives — if you know how to read it. Most confusion is people assuming a higher number means "waterproof". It doesn't.
What IPX means
IP = Ingress Protection. The X means the dust rating wasn't tested (normal for earbuds). The digit after is the water rating, 0 to 8.

The practical rules
- IPX4 is the minimum for gym or outdoor use. Below that, sweat corrodes the charging contacts within months.
- No earbud is safe for swimming unless the maker explicitly says so with a depth and time. IPX7 means survived-a-dunk, not lap-swimming.
- Sweat is harsher than water. Salt is corrosive. Even an IPX4 bud should be wiped dry after a workout — see How to Clean Earbuds and the Charging Case.
- The rating is for the buds, not the case. Charging cases are almost never water-rated. Never put damp buds in the case.
- Ratings degrade. Seals age and the adhesive around the mesh weakens. A two-year-old IPX5 bud is not still IPX5.

Frequently asked questions
Can I swim with IPX7 earbuds?+
No. IPX7 means the buds survived a 1-metre, 30-minute still-water immersion test — not the pressure of swimming. Only buy for swimming if the maker states a swim rating.
Is the charging case water resistant too?+
Almost never. The IPX rating is for the earbuds only. Never put damp buds back in the case — that corrodes the contacts.
